大家知道在問別人目前年齡時是說 How old are you?
於是很容易誤以為只要是問「幾歲」都可以用 How old 來開頭
所以當要問別人是幾歲時做某件事時，就可能會用 How old did you…? 這樣的句子
但是這樣在文法上又是錯的句子了
因為 How old 後面只能接 be 動詞的問句
而且因為 How old 在這種問句裡指的是人的年紀，而不是用來修飾句子裡的一般動詞
所以要問別人是幾歲時結婚的，不能說 How old did you get married?
而要說 How old were you when you got married?
問別人是幾歲時找到第一份工作也是 How old were you when you found your first job?
再多給幾個例句：
在回答這些問題時，可以一樣用 when 接子句
比如：
像是 at age xx / at the age of xx / at xx 等
(注意 age 的用法，the 和 of 必須一起使用，不能說 at the age xx 或 at age of xx)
比如：
注意是用 in elementary school, in high school, in college 等
不可加冠詞
不過以上兩句是因為主詞和後面在該求學階段的人是一樣的，才可以省略掉 when 的子句部份
當主詞和後面的人是不一樣時，則一定要用 when 子句
所以不能說：His parents got divorced in high school.
不然意思會變成是他父母兩人自己在唸高中時離婚的
假如意思是要說他父母離婚時他在唸高中
要說 His parents got divorced when he was in high school. 才對
