「give someone a run for his money」是什麼意思?

這是源自賭馬的一句話

to give someone a run for his money本來是指一個人既然下了注,就要好好地跑一場給他看

現在是指一個人會盡全力去比賽,使對手沒有那麼容易贏的意思

注意後面的所有格要跟著前面的someone變動

我們來造些句:

The tennis player certainly gave his opponent a run for his money.
(這名網球選手真的讓他的對手苦戰了一番。)

Although we didn’t win, we gave the other team a run for their money.
(雖然我們沒有贏,但我們讓對手苦戰了一番。)

One thing is for sure: she is going to give the other contestants a run for their money.
(可以肯定的是,她將會讓其他參賽者有一番苦戰。)
