「shanghai」(上海)當動詞是什麼意思?

Shanghai 這個字通常是大寫,指中國地名「上海」

可是它小寫又是什麼意思呢?

像對話裡常出現 I’ve been shanghaied. / I got shanghaied.

其實它小寫可以當動詞「誘騙;強迫」的意思

起因是十九世紀美國前往上海淘金的輪船嚴重缺人

船東只好用各種手段在當地綁架年輕的男子當水手

後來「上海」就成為這種綁架行為的代名詞

引申到現在就有騙人的意思

所以 I’ve been shanghaied. / I got shanghaied. 就是「我被騙了」

要說「被騙去做某事」就可以用 be shanghaied / got shanghaied into N / Ving 的句型


我們來造些句:

He was shanghaied into buying that piece of equipment.
(他受騙而買了那個昂貴的設備。)

They shanghaied me.
(他們騙了我。)

I got shanghaied into their investment plans.
(我被他們的投資計劃騙了。)
