under 和 below, beneath 有什麼不同?

under 和 below 的中文意思都是 ”在...下面/之下”

如果只是指 B 物的位置在低於 A 物的地方, 那麼兩者可以通用

比如: My office is two floors under / below the first floor.

通常會用 under 的情況:

(1) 某個東西被另一個東西遮蓋隱藏住了

像是: I hid the money under a tree. / He wore a T-shirt under the shirt.

(2) 指未達某個年紀或數字少於...

像是: The show is free for children under 12. / His weight has dropped under 90 lbs.

(3) 某些固定用法的片語

例如: under attack, under arrest, under pressure, under control,

under the circumstances…... 或其他這方面意思的字詞

較常用 below 的情況:

(1) 不是正好在一個東西下方, 沒有接觸面

像是: The supermarket is below the movie theater. 只知是在下方, 但不見得是三樓和四樓的關係

有可能是四樓和二樓或一樓的關係

(2) 在...... “之下” 的範圍

例如溫度的 10 degrees below zero, below the surface of the water 等

(3) 在某種水平, 水平面, 標準之下

像是 below sea level, below average, an I.Q. below 80

至於 beneath 這個字, 只能用在和某個東西有接觸面的 ”之下”, 所以它和 under 通用

但比較正式和文雅, 多半會在詩, 文學作品或歌詞裡看到, 生活中較少用

像 Bette Midler 有首很有名的歌叫 Wind Beneath My Wings (翼下之風)
