像 bored 和 boring 這種從同 一個字衍生出來的兩個形容詞
很多人都搞不清楚何時該用哪一個
其實像這種成對的形容詞, 都是由動詞變來的
而且這些動詞本身就是 ”令人感到...” 的意思
以 bored 和 boring 來說
它們是從動詞 bore 而來的
而 bore 這個動詞的意思就是 ”令人感到無趣”
這種動詞在中文裡沒有, 所以很多人難以理解
像 ”他令我感到無趣” 就是 He bores me.
My job bores me. 就是 ”我的工作令我感到無趣”
Life bores me. 就是 ”生活令我感到無趣”
如果你在跟一個人說話時, 發現對方沒在專心聽
就可以問他: Am I boring you?
由 bore 這個動詞衍生出兩個形容詞: bored 和 boring
bored 其實就是被動語態 p.p. (過去分詞) 的用法
所以它的基本意思是 ”被...弄到覺得無聊的”
也就是指一個人因為某個人事物而產生了無聊的感覺
簡單地說, bored 就是 ”感到無聊的”
會有感覺的, 一定是人, 而非事物
所以像 bored 這種形容感覺或情緒的動詞加 ed 變成的形容詞, 只會用來指 ”人”
表示 ”為別人帶來...感覺的”
也就是 ”令人感到...的”, 可以用來指人, 也可以指事物
(因為也有些人會讓別人覺得和他在一起很無聊 )
像我們可以說: He is such a boring person. He only tells bad jokes.
或 That movie is really boring. = That movie really bores me.

我們只要先記住: ed 和 ing, 一個是 ”感到...”, 一個是 ”令人感到...”
搞不清楚時, 就記住: 字少的配字少的, 字多的配字多的
所以 ed 兩個字母就是配中文裡同樣字少的 ”感到”
而 ing 三個字母就配中文裡同樣字比較多的 ”令人感到”
這樣是不是比較好記了呢?

比如 tired / tiring, worried / worrying, surprised / surprising
depressed / depressing (感到沮喪 / 令人感到沮喪)
interested / interesting, shocked / shocking (感到震驚 / 令人感到震驚)
frustrated / frustrating (感到挫折 / 令人感到挫折)
excited / exciting
embarrassed / embarrassing (感到尷尬, 難為情 / 令人感到尷尬, 難為情)
